Frequently Asked Questions
Cost?
For all participants, Impact Richmond is $325.
Who can attend?
Rising 7th graders to 12th grade students up to 20 years old. Adults over 21 can participate on staff as adult chaperones with your church group or as "gurus" on worksites.
What type of work will we be doing?
We provide home repair for low income, elderly or disabled homeowners. Projects we have completed in the past include drywall, subfloor, interior and exterior painting, yard work, cleaning, building porches and wheel chair ramps. Every year we find our selves doing something a little different to help meet the needs of the people we are working for. NOTE: Impact Richmond does not do repair work in the plumbing, roofing or electrical fields.
Where do we sleep?
Campers stay at The Chapel's South campus located in Midlothian, VA. We recommend that all campers bring a sleeping bag with pad or a twin size air mattress, no larger.
What is provided?
Impact Richmond provides the following:
-
Breakfast, lunch and dinner
-
Lodging and showers
-
Building materials and tools
-
Project and construction coordination
-
Orientation materials
-
Fun evening activities
-
Teaching and worship
-
Impact Richmond t-shirt
How many chaperones are requested?
Youth groups must have one adult volunteer, 21 years or older, for every six students. If you are bringing both guys and girls, you need volunteers of each gender. It is desirable but not necessary for the adult volunteer to have home repair experience, but volunteers are expected to help students on the worksite.
What about meals?
Impact Richmond provides all of your meals from dinner the night you arrive to breakfast the morning you depart. Morning and evening meals are served cafeteria-style at the lodging facility. Lunch is provided for each crew to eat at the worksite. Please let us know in advance if anyone in your group has food allergies.
-
NOTE: Monday night dinner is not provided. This is a night where work groups venture out into the city of Richmond and experience a "night on the town" so dinner is on your own! Please bring $10-12 for a meal.
Transportation
You will need to provide transportation for groups of about 7 to and from the worksites during the week. We recommend the use of 15 passenger vans or church busses. Impact Richmond makes all attempts for the owner of any vehicle to drive his/her own vehicle to the work site. However, at times, your vehicle may be driven by another adult to transport the participants to the worksite.
-
IMPORTANT: Richmond is a city with tolls. Please come prepared to pay tolls as you travel to and from your worksites each day. Tolls are often $3-4 per day.
Who will we work with?
The church groups may be assigned to work at different sites. We feel that this helps you get to know more people and helps build true community. Your group will be randomized so you will be with other students and leaders from other churches. Impact attracts all churches and denominations so you will meet new people with different experiences! In addition to the workers Impact provides, we connect with local community leaders, pastors, and contractors to help aid with the week.
Will we do other kinds of ministry?
Yes! In addition to the home repairs we do, Impact Richmond is about relationship building. Groups are encouraged to build relationships with their homeowners and their neighbors by sharing the word of God. On Thursday night, we invite all of our homeowners to join us for an evening of fellowship with dinner and worship.
